TIPS and Why Enter the MPI International Image Challenge

As a member of MPI, by entering the MPI International Image Challenge (IIC), you earn points towards your next level within the Master Program. If you are an Associate or a Craftsman Member, to earn your Craftsman or Master Designation, you will need to enter the MPI IIC to earn points towards your next level. If you are a Master and looking at achieving another Master Designation while you work towards the Prestigious Grand Master Photographer Designation, entering the MPI IIC is how to achieve this honor.

The IIC is an educational competition that challenges us to grow. If you are a seasoned photographer, the IIC helps reinsure us on our work. MPI Master members as well work towards earning additional Master Designations and Grand Master in Category Designations or, the Grand Master Photographer which is the MPI Highest Honor.

Results from your MPI IIC entry are applied to your Master Program points.

Example 1; Associate to Craftsman Level

If you placed as an Associate Member, to achieve your Craftsman Designation, you would  be required to earn (5) Achievement Awards (75% - 78%) and (5) Prestige Awards (79% - 84%)

Example 2; Craftsman to Master Level

If you placed a Craftsman and working towards your Master Level, you would be required to earn (5) Prestige  Awards (79% - 84%) and (5) Awards of Distinction (85% - 90%). You would also be required to earn 1 or more Certifications. You are as well required to present 10 hours of MPI approved workshops or write 3 Articles on the Master Category you are working towards. MPI believes that, when you are able to teach or write an article on the subject, you are ready for the Master level. Visit the Master Program for details.

Some Tips when entering the MPI IIC

  • When entering the annual MPI IIC, make sure to thoroughly read the Rules and Guidelines annually as they may change from time to time.

  • Understand the 10 judging criteria located in the Rules and Guidelines. Try to review your images prior to submitting. It is a shame to lose points for images that could have easily been fixed with some extra time. View your image not as you would view it, but as an instructor or judge would view it. Try not to sumbit images close to us as our family or childen. Are there cameraspots? Are there distracting elements that can be removed to bring your image higher? How is your exposure? How is your presentation? Does the eye flow nicely to the subject? If your image is full of noise because of the way you captured it.. do you feel you should submit this image?

  • If you are not sure on which class to enter, reading the details in the Category and Classes pdf provided will help. If you are still not sure, you can simply reach out to me a competitions@mpio.co.

  • DO NOT leave your entry till the last minute - I cannot stress this enough!! When we rush to put together a successful entry, we can end up disappointed as we can miss so much or the deadline has come and the competition has closed. It can also cause your entry not to make it in time from to many entering at the same time.

  • We advise NOT to post images on Social Media that you are thinking of entering. Many judges are on-line and when knowing the image, it tends to loose the WOW factor as when seeing the image for the first time. This could cost you points. Please do not post images in the MPI Official Group as all MPI Judges are in that group.

  • If you are working towards a higher Designations level, try and enter annually as this helps with accumulating your points.

  • A number of members are working towards a 2 or more Master Designations simultaneously. If you are an Associate working towards your Craftsman Designation, keep in mind that points earned from all 6 Categories count towards your next level.

  • One of MPI goals is about bringing awareness to clients and showing them the difference when hiring professional services or purchasing Art. MPI works hard at creating branding that members are proud to display and share. Take advantage of sharing your good news if successful. Share your sealed images, digital certificates, nominations or trophies. This is all part of your branding. Show your clients and your friends what you have accomplished and promote to your clients why they should choose you over so many others in the industry for their Photographic and Fine Art needs.

  • Explain to your clients that these awards are not as many they see on Facebook from photographers earning likes in groups from freinds and family or being judged by a Facebook or Social Media group. You were judged by some of the TOP educators, mentors and professionals in the field. Most of all, Be Proud of what you have accomplished! Entering a competition in any Professional Organization is the first step to helping you grow and in helping us stay current in today's ever changing industy.

  • Lastly - Pat yourself on the back for taking the step to enter and to keep learning. This is the MOST important accomplishment, even if you did not do as well as you would have liked. This is a learning experience and we grow with each year.

  • If you are Master working towards your Grand Master Designation - we look forward to your continued success.

Good luck as you enter annually!!
